Menopause: Women lose more than 2 hours of sleep a night

Study finds that the typical symptoms of the condition affected the sleep quality of almost two thirds of the participants.

A new study, involving 2,000 participants, found that women lose about two and a half hours of sleep a night during the menopausal period. In addition, according to the survey, the problem affects almost two-thirds of those evaluated.

The work, which was commissioned by a bedding company, indicates that these women wake up an average of 2.7 times a night and experience problems such as night sweats (61%), insomnia (41%) and heart palpitations (23%). . As a result, these women say they are more tired during the day than they normally would be.

For Hannah Shore, a sleep specialist at Silentnight, the company that commissioned the research, the study reveals the scale of sleep problems for menopausal women. This is a reality that other studies had already shown: according to the Sleep Institute, six out of ten women suffer from insomnia during this period.

Insomnia and menopause: what is the relationship?

Menopause is the phase in which the natural interruption of menstruation occurs, caused by the reduction in the production of female hormones (estrogen and progesterone) by the ovaries. On average, the condition occurs between 48 and 51 years of age.

In addition to the common symptoms of menopause – such as hot flashes (hot flushes), night sweats, mood swings, periods of irritability, anxiety and depression, weight gain and slowing of metabolism – insomnia can affect some women, especially during menopause ( transition period between menopause and post-menopause).

This happens precisely because of the hormonal imbalance and the drop in estrogen production, related to the regulation of women’s sleep, according to the Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the State of São Paulo (SOGESP).

Insomnia affects more women than men

Women are more likely to suffer from insomnia due to the hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle and menopause. Pregnancy can also cause sleep disturbances.

According to a study by the University of California, USA, insomnia affects 78% of pregnant women and may be related to hormonal, physiological, metabolic, psychological and postural variations. However, the day-to-day stress attributed to household chores, motherhood and working hours can also affect women more.

A survey by Webedia Life – Insights, released in April this year by Minha Vida, showed that women are more affected by fatigue than male participants: 51% of participants point out that they would like to sleep more when they wake upwhile 65% of men indicated that they get enough sleep and that they usually wake up feeling refreshed.

In addition, stress affects women’s quality of life more than men’s, also according to the survey. Of the women heard, 57% pointed out that stress is something that makes them very bad and only 1% said they had never suffered from the condition.

On the other hand, more than 50% of men said that stress is normal and part of life, while 10% said they never felt the symptom. The survey was carried out online between December 2021 and January 2022 and had the participation of 1,016 visitors to Minha Vida.
